Sciatica

Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, typically from the lower back into the glutes, hamstring, and down one leg. It occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes irritated or compressed—often due to spinal misalignment, disc bulges, tight hip or piriformis muscles, inflammation, or restricted mobility in the lower back and pelvis.

Because the sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body, even mild irritation can create significant discomfort or changes in movement patterns. Sciatica may develop gradually or appear suddenly after lifting, prolonged sitting, or repetitive stress.

Common Symptoms

  • Sharp, shooting, or burning pain down one leg
  • Numbness, tingling, or “pins and needles” in the glutes, hamstring, calf, or foot
  • Pain that worsens with sitting, standing, coughing, or bending forward
  • Weakness in the leg or difficulty bearing weight
  • Tightness in the hips, hamstrings, or lower back
  • Relief when lying down or changing positions
  • Pain localized in the low back that spreads downward

CFW Approach

At Center for Wellness, we address sciatica by improving alignment, reducing nerve irritation, and restoring balanced movement through the spine, pelvis, and lower body.

A personalized care plan for sciatica may include:

  • Gentle chiropractic adjustments to improve mobility in the lumbar spine, sacrum, and pelvis
  • Decompression and mobilization techniques to reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve
  • Soft tissue and craniosacral therapy targeting the piriformis, glutes, and surrounding structures that may be compressing the nerve
  • Core and hip stabilization exercises to support long-term spinal alignment and prevent recurrence
  • Sciatic nerve mobility (nerve flossing) to improve nerve glide and reduce irritation
  • Postural and ergonomic guidance to minimize daily triggers such as sitting posture, lifting mechanics, or repetitive stress
  • Lifestyle and movement coaching to reduce inflammation and support healingSharp, shooting, or burning pain down one leg
